Stagecoach Era

Distances between stagecoach stops, Sacramento to Virginia City and beyond.

People needed stagecoaches to cross the continent, but also depended on them to pursue move around locally. Silver strikes in 1859 created great demand for stagecoach service between California and Nevada. The Pioneer Stage Company ran four stages daily in each direction by 1864, each crowded with passengers and shipments of gold and silver bullion.
