Henry Wells

Henry Wells (1804-1878) entered the express business in 1841, and steadily expanded his business westward. With William G. Fargo and others, Wells created the American Express Company in New York in 1850. American Express declined to extend their business to California, so Wells and Fargo founded a new banking and express company in 1852 to serve the western frontier—Wells, Fargo and Company.
