February 12 – September 30, 2007 Wells Fargo treasure boxes carried on board stagecoaches and railroad express cars tempted many an outlaw. Wells Fargo fought back, employing special officers, or detectives, to prevent robberies and pursue thieves.Wells Fargo special officers looked for items stolen in robberies, suspicious characters, and clues uncovered during the chase. Items left at the scene such as weapons, bullets, footprints, tools, or clothing sometimes led to arrests. Like today, most captures resulted from solid detective work. Learn how chief detective James B. Hume tracked down the infamous Black Bart and how today’s Wells Fargo Corporate security officers prevent fraud and theft, as well as valuable advice on how consumers can protect themselves. Exhibits include: Items dropped by Black Bart while fleeing his final robbery.
- An 1895 check, altered from $12 to $22,000, one of the most famous forgery cases of the nineteenth century.
- 19th century machines for protecting checks and other banking.
- Treasure boxes and iron safes.
- Weapons used by robbers and express messengers.
- Photos and documents from Hume's own case files, now preserved in the Wells Fargo Archives.
