Wells Fargo History-since 1852 home

March 18, 1852

In New York City on March 18, 1852, Henry Wells, William Fargo and others signed articles of association that formed a joint stock company to do banking and express business in faraway California. Wells Fargo & Company’s Express transacted financial services through the fastest means available—overseas by sailing ship or steamer, overland by stagecoach, Pony Express and railroad; and later, electronically by telegraph, radio, telephone and the internet. Wells Fargo has come through for miners, merchants, farmers and ranchers since 1852. Wells, Fargo & Co. has grown with the West, with the nation and has a distinct place in history.
