This Old Shoe

In the late 1890’s, a Wells Fargo agent found a mateless shoe. With tongue in cheek, he or she sent it on to a fellow agent with a bit of poetry. Through a circuitous route, the shoe traveled between two states, picking up a few more messages along the way.

“If steadily worn, Tho’ tattered and torn, In my strength I’ll have Pretty good backing; So help me along To the mate I belong, Where in my use we’ll resign What is lacking”

“This little shoe, if truth was known, Perhaps by cyclone it was blown From St. Louis to this state And now its looking for its mate.”
                    (signed) PO8

Today, the lonely shoe resides in the Wells Fargo History Museum in Los Angeles, without ever finding its mate.
