Wells Fargo offered its services not only across the United States, but
around the world as well. This 1886 Spanish language guide helped
Mexican customers import American goods—anything from food, to
carriages, to the latest novel, across Mexico’s growing rail system. A
beautifully illustrated book and an example of Wells Fargo’s commitment
to provide its customers with a wide range of products and services
throughout its extensive network.
Still providing products worldwide,Colgate
& Company, New York (now Colgate-
Palmolive Company) made its “Cashmere
Bouquet” bath products available to Mexican
consumers through Wells Fargo’s
“Guia”.
A rare Copy of this publication can be found on display at the the Wells
Fargo History Museum in Los Angeles. |

This Old Shoe
In the late 1890’s, a Wells Fargo agent found a mateless
shoe. With tongue in cheek, he or she sent it on to a fellow
agent with a bit of poetry. Through a circuitous route, the
shoe traveled between two states, picking up a few more
messages along the way.
“If steadily worn,
Tho’ tattered and torn,
In my strength I’ll have
Pretty good backing;
So help me along
To the mate I belong,
Where in my use we’ll resign
What is lacking”
“This little shoe, if truth was known,
Perhaps by cyclone it was blown
From St. Louis to this state
And now its looking for its mate.”
(signed) PO8
Today, the lonely shoe resides in the Wells Fargo History
Museum in Los Angeles, without ever finding its mate.
