155th Opening Day Anniversary
Wells Fargo through the Decades:
At 9 o'clock the morning of July 13, 1852, banker Reuben W. Washburn and expressman Samuel W. Carter threw open the iron fire-proof doors at Wells Fargo's new building at 424 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. Carter weighed and purchased gold dust, while Washburn sold drafts payable in the east. One of their first customers bought a draft forwarding $100 to a Mrs. Sophie Parker of Buffalo, New York. That evening, Wells Fargo messengers arrived by riverboat from Sacramento, reporting that the new Wells Fargo office there had also opened to a good business. It was opening day for Wells Fargo, now celebrating its 155th year in business!
